BACK TO SCHOOL LONELINESS FOR DOGS
Parents celebrate while kids tremble as they return to school. After a summer filled with fun in the sun with the kids spoiling their dogs with attention, are the dogs suddenly without this fun?
According to the survey done by the American Animal Hospital Association 75 percent of the people surveyed feel guilty about leaving their dog alone. No one wants to think of a family member home alone.
Until someone comes home your dog is usually fine, as long as they have eaten, fresh water is available and the morning walk has been completed.
If the dog is showing signs of stress beware of rushing out and getting your dog a pet to relieve the loneliness. Your heart is in the right place, however, your dog may perceive your plan of action from a dog’s eye view. “Who will be the leader now?”
Also, other behaviors may surface such as resource guarding of food, territory, you or the kids. If you want your dog to have company, you can start out with 2 animals. (I.e. female dog / male dog or kitten / dog.)
Separation Anxiety caused by being to attached to the children during the summer can result in behavior problems such as barking excessively, howling, potting in the house or chewing things.
Your dog may show excessive joy at the return of the kids or you.
You may also take your dog to a day care center. Dogs get exercise, grooming and playtime. Check with your local day care center for what exciting things they offer.
You may also hire a dog walker or sitter to come to your house and tale care of your dog while you work and the kids are in school.
The best strategy is to start early by setting your dog up with the new schedule:
- Depart at the same time each day
- Leave calmly as your dog will be calmer also. Making a big scene sets your dog up for nervousness and sometimes-destructive behavior.
